Credit where credit is due, Larian was always like this. Even with their less successful titles they still made sure to fix all issues before moving on.
I get what you’re saying, but it’s sad that this very basic aspect of listening to customer feedback and implementing said feedback is so foreign to us now.
The performance improvements alone are insane. I’m playing on PS5, just got into act 3. I turned it off on Tuesday a little frustrated by how the game was running inside of the lower city. Turned it back on after patching and everything is smoother than the entire rest of the game has been for me.
Also, being able to access all party member inventories is a game changer.
That’s good to read. I had a bug for a few patches where I couldn’t even use DLSS (local multiplayer) so act 3 was quite annoying. Everytime we went into a basement it was noticeable smoother and enjoyable. This was fixed I believe with patch 4.
Hopefully this brings the frame rate up and that will let me enjoy and end act 3.
The lack of decent inventory management meant that when I got new companions later on, I just didn’t use them for more than their story quest, and they were mostly wearing their default gear.
Just seemed more effort than it was worth to sort through everything, including all those chests that litter the camp but might as well be voids because as soon as something went into one, I never used it again.
I used the chests mainly to hold camp supplies, and also a loot dump when there was a lot of valuable armor to loot that was too heavy to carry. Loot until full, send to camp, loot more. Go to the vendor, sell all, go to camp, grab until full, go back to the vendor.
Im still in the beginning of the game so maybe I haven’t noticed something, but I’m confused by what you’re saying. I’ve been able to access all thier inventories at the same time.
Once you’ve been playing longer, you’ll see. At the start you can pretty much just carry everything about, but later on you’ll be sending armour and weapons to camp or dumping them on a character you think they might be useful on in certain situations.
Then, if and when you get a new companion (and you might not get them depending on your choices), you think “oh, I wonder what gloves I should put on him”.
And that’s when you realise that all the gear is scattered among the camp chests and characters in camp, and you end up just not bothering.
It’s even a thing between your origin characters, as you mess about decking e.g. Gale in all the best magic gear, and then you need to use Wyll for something and you just can’t be bothered to move it all over so don’t use him because you know you’re going to have to move it all back again when you want a companion that isn’t such a whiny bastard.
I just noticed this yesterday. As a gay man, I find this makes the game even more fun to play. I hope everyone else is enjoying seeing the guys jiggle.
Larian keeps perfecting the game, and I am very impressed with that level of dedication from a gaming company.
As a heterosexual man, the game went from utterly unplayable to game of the year. Magic I can suspend my disbelief for. But a lack of johnson physics? That’s a step too far.
I’m so glad they love this game as much as I do. If they eventually added a DM or creative mode to run custom campaigns I’d be over the moon. Take my money Larian!
The problem wouldn’t be the studio making it, it would be the monetization imposed on every facet of it. Any possible add-on would be dlc or part of a subscription. They wouldn’t even allow them to do significant free updates unless it was tied to a paid product or hefty subscription fee.
I don’t really want Larian getting looped into being a WotC shill. I hope they stay independent and keep on making the best games they can make. Single player or small party story games never get old.
DNDBeyond is just another bullshit live service with subscriptions in perpetuity.
That’s preposterous, WotC would never do anything like that! They’ll helpfully not even mention $ anywhere in the app, instead we’ll get Gold Pieces (gp), Electrum Pieces (ep), and Platinum Pieces (pp). If you log into D&DBeyond, you’ll get a daily 5 gp reward and if you complete your daily quests, you have the chance to unlock even more rewards (1 ep per quest). Every session you run or participate in gets you another reward, while every purchase of a digital-only DLC rulebook grants you further rewards.
Nevermind that it would take hundreds of daily logins and constant vigilance with daily quests to even be able to afford anything, they’ll helpfully provide the option to “level up” your account to instantly unlock rewards without having to go through all that trouble.
If anything I would love for Larian to continue developing their DoS rules engine further. Playing BG3 I just wanted the rules from DoS. More punts and more combo barrels.
They have such a mode in Divinity: Original Sin II. Sure it’s not DnD but it’s a fun system. Never got the hang of that dm mode though, I’m too stupid.
Pretty sure custom campaigns will definitely arrive at some point, just like they did with DOS2. I want to say Larian has even stated that they’ll eventually open the doors for it and potentially modding support?
I kinda bet WotC would take issues with them making a dm mode like in Divinity… Since they are trying to get people to only ever play dnd on the dndbeyond vtt, I doubt they’d be keen on letting larian basically build a better version, lol.
Similar to other people, I think you should own it. Try to think of it not as “I betrayed my character” but rather “my character gave in to temptation and regrets it but has to live with the consequences”, then use that. Play the character as though they are unhappy with the changes, they regret it, but they must soldier on.
People aren’t all perfect archetypes, and characters can have flaws and nuances. And the best part is, if your character up until now had no reason to make the choice you made, maybe it’s time for an out of game flashback. Work backwards… what thing could have happened in their backstory that would explain why they made this seemingly incongruous choice? Why did this tempt them when so many other things did not, and why does this cause them so much shame now. That kind of stuff.
Or don’t! Just some suggestions, since it sounds like you’ve got nothing to lose, may as well try some character development!
Neverwinter Nights 2 and BG2 had 9th level spells in a real time with pause game and it worked fine. So it is totally doable, especially since BG3 is turn based.
just because you add spells doesnt mean you need to add ALL spells, not every spell is available levels 1-9 in BG3. We just dont need to add in things like Wish.
Just have it give you the ability to cast any spell. It’s the basic ability of Wish and the only thing that won’t make you roll percentiles to see if you lose access to the spell forever.
I’m fine with it being unbalanced like Throne of Bhaal was, where the only people who stood a chance against you were other children of Bhaal. That was a blast and a unique experience for a crpg with some really cool powers.
Imo it shouldn’t be balanced. But there has to be buildup in the story and ToB had two full games of it.
Just to be technical, here… Those past games, BG1 and BG2, utilized a very different ruleset (the ADND ruleset, if I recall correctly) to the ruleset BG3 utilized (5e). While they share a lineage, ADND and 5e are quite different.
It’s a game. The fact that they use 5e for most things, doesn’t mean they can’t include other rules or explanations. A wish spell might not even exist in this universe, and it would be fine. Revivify scrolls don’t exist and don’t work this way in 5e. There are no “surfaces” in 5e like they exist in bg3. A lot of feats are changed (so far as to even break bounded accuracy). They could easily implement lvl20, but they decided to end the game around 12, which is fair. Let’s not act as if they had no choice though
You’re absolutely right… it’s a game. Larian could do whatever they wish. Then again, what’s the point of utilizing an IP and Ruleset for your game if you’re not planning to adhere to that IP and Ruleset as closely as you can within the limitations of PC game? And if you do adhere (as much as you can) to the rules, then there are going to be some things that are possible in one ruleset that are not possible in another (and vice versa) while maintaining a fun player experience in a medium (PC gaming) that cannot adapt rules like a human can while still being accurate enough for those players that know the ruleset and those that have never used that ruleset before.
Easily implemented level 20? Most tabletop game masters can’t implement a level 20 game without the limitations of a video game. They invariably wind up cartoonish, broken, and unbalanced. There is a reason there is only one official adventure that even ranges up to 20. Balance may not matter to you but It does matter for a game.
No, they can, they just have to accept that it isn’t supposed to be a balanced experience in the first place. It was an absolute blast in throne of Bhaal. They would need a story that actually justifies it though.
Also, is anyone actually “bitching” about it? people just want more bg3 with their character and who can blame them for that?
I have a different problem with gale. His wall of flame is a fantastic room control spell that can do some serious damage… if only allies would STOP walking right through it!
I hope I don't loose my gay card over this, but I am terrible at picking out things to wear. So I guess that stereotype is just wrong, or I am not doing gay right. (Grin)
On the easy difficulty level it’s not too intense, and you can save anywhere so you can definitely come at it in small bursts of time. Some days I have 3 hours to play, sometimes 10 minutes. It’s always a good time.
I’m not so sure how appropriate it is for a 14 year old, though. There’s a lot of brutal violence, macabre imagery, and sexual content that is questionable for a young teen.
I’d do a little more research into whether you’re sure it’s age appropriate, but on all other counts I’d say it’s a winner.
Also depends on the kid. I distinctly remember watching my dad play bg2 when I was 5ish, and then digging into it around 15/16 when I got a laptop for school. The gore and violence didn’t bother me, but not every kid is the same. I’d say it depends on what kind of media they already ingest.
That is to say that it’s very possible to translate it. Now as to whether OP’s translation is accurate or not, i have no idea, cause i have better things to do than read fake text out of an NPCs horn.
You can waste my time by posting here, I’ve seen many of your contributions and I greatly appreciate your efforts. I don’t usually say anything though. That other guy can fuck off.
A lot of people have been hyper critical about the content people have been posting, and even more upset when it’s one person posting a lot. I don’t know where they expect to get content from.
