leave_it_blank, in The Netherlands

In Germany the streets are far too often a fight for survival. I miss the Netherlands, driving there, bike or car, was so much more relaxing.

But, you know, Germans and their cars…

txmyx, (edited )

In my experience the bike infrastructure was great, but riding the bike in the city was more stressful than in Germany.

UrPartnerInCrime,
@UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works avatar

Cause they don’t want you driving in the city

mryessir,
KpntAutismus,

as a car driver, i have no problems with bike drivers themselves. i hate whoever thought 1 lane and a thin sidewalk was enough road.

anti_antidote,

Gets you to slow down and pay attention to your surroundings, doesn’t it? That’s the point, if you build roads that feel cramped to drivers they’ll naturally drive slower (i.e. actually the speed limit). Building all streets like they’re highways is a good way to get people going 50-60 mph on roads with houses directly on them.

KpntAutismus,

it’s also a great way to put people’s lives at risk. i don’t think anyone thought of what you’re describing.

AMuscelid,

No, that’s explicitly the reason for it, and it’s been shown to reduce the severity of crashes because people drive the speed limit when they feel it’s risky to go faster.

KpntAutismus,

so swerving into oncoming traffic is safe? i had numerous near crashes because people overtook a bike driver coming my way. the netherlands do it better, the bikes have their own separated lane.

grue,

Your feelings do not match actual reality.

TeckFire,

So, there’s a balance. If you don’t build enough room to do anything but drive slow to be safe, the moment someone is fast, the chances of a crash are very high.

If you build a road that has too much clearance, you end up with people driving faster, which is okay because there’s more room for people to be out of the way, likely reducing the amount of crashes. The drawback to this is, if people drive faster, the fewer crashes that do occur are at higher speeds, which are more deadly.

So the ratio of number of crashes to severity of crashes is what the end result is.

Granted, I live in the US where single lane country back-roads will have people in trucks going down at 50MPH randomly, so I don’t know if Europeans drive more cautiously. I know their driving tests are more comprehensive for sure.

perviouslyiner,
KpntAutismus,

11:17 is the timestamp that is most relevant here, separated bike paths should be the norm. and not the shitty “fahrradschutzsstreifen” bullshit they are pulling in germany. i have to swerve around people going not even 20km/h when i’m going 50. there’s no way that reduces accidents. the netherlands rock. i went on a vacation there a few years ago. public transport is so much better there. (key phrase “viable alternative”)

captainlezbian,

Oh is that a German thing? I thought it was just my Opa

6daemonbag,

My gramps used to think even looking at his cars was asking permission to drive or touch them. “Nein!”

There’s no competing with Belgian beer, but I genuinely enjoy a Grolsch or Hertog Jan. There’s also quite a few great local breweries.

Annoyed_Crabby, in If only I had time to re-watch everything again

That’s the fun of it, you rewatch season 1 and used that knowledge to criticise how bad season 2 become.

Bonus point is you rewatch the original series and use that knowledge to criticise how bad the sequel is. Hello Legend of Korra.

Waluigis_Talking_Buttplug,

Korra had so much promise, but you should absolutely be blaming Nickelodeon for constant interference. Nickelodeon alone ruined the potential of that show.

Annoyed_Crabby,

They have so many writer for such a short story.

Jake_Farm,
@Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz avatar

And how fucked Korra made the LITERAL EMBODIMENTS OF NATURE!

Annoyed_Crabby,

She just did.

How did toddler Korra learn 3 element without being taught? She just did.

How did everyone suddenly able to use air bending so effectively without being taught, where Katara and Toph barely even know how to control their element when they first discover they are a bender? They just did.

The show moved the plot with “just happened to be” with nonsensical exposition. It’s a mess.

Jake_Farm,
@Jake_Farm@sopuli.xyz avatar

Supposedly the show had the same writers, either they sold out or were paid so little they didn’t care.

MintyAnt,

They wrote her to be pretty constantly on her ass throughout all 4 seasons, I just don’t get this criticism. Yes she was naturally good at bending most elements and physically impressive, but that’s pretty easy to accept when she has other major flaws that her character needs to grow to overcome.

Annoyed_Crabby,

It’s good that you likes it, it does has its moment, but it destroyed the whole foundation set by the Last Airbender. Korra had issue, but the issue of the series doesn’t really stem from her character, it’s the whole setup. Like i said, the plot push forward purely by “it just happened”, smart guy Zaheer didn’t even know power vacuum will just lead to someone replacing the throne, third season story is purely “Zaheer just happened to have airbending power”, season two Korra just happened to know how to goes Blue Ultraman to fight Red Ultraman, so on and on.

And yes, Korra may be on her ass all the time, but all her suffering is her own doing. She being an ass to Tenzin in season 2 lead to her getting her ass kicked and all the connection to previous avatar severed. She allow the portal to remain open lead to Republic City’s overun with spirit vine, and her getting her ass kicked and mercury poisoned, which lead to her further suffering along with Republic City getting destroyed in season 4. It’s a serious issue with the writing because unlike Aang, where his suffering isn’t his own making, the writter make Korra constantly making the wrong choice which in turn lead to her and everyone suffering.

MintyAnt,

Korra isn’t nearly as bad as some fans make it out to be. The show certainly has some big issues, but it’s overall a great show.

kandoh,

It was originally just supposed to to be one season but they got surprised by Nick ordering three more. It’s still a great series but they definitely stumbled figuring out where the story was going.

30 will be here a lot quicker than you think. I also used to think 30 was old AF when I was 20.

Now I'm 41 and I don't know how it happened so goddamn fast. Every year, I get more and more anxious about trying to get shit done before my time comes.

dzervas,

Contrary to popular similar stories I had the feeling that I was in my 20-25s for “I was there for a long time” and I was eager for the next decades (with a small break for depression but I got through) Now I’m 28 and it kinda feels it speeds up but I don’t complain (but I do complain about everything else, A LOT)

PolandIsAStateOfMind,
@PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml avatar

It does speeds up. I remember my teens and 20’s and they weren’t that short. But next 2 decades are a blur. Either some brain quirk or just mindless drudgery taking up 80% or my time did that.

dzervas,

yea makes sense given that at your 30s-40s it’s very likely that you’ve end up at your “career path” and after 1-2 years working on the same thing (otherwise you’d be full of stress) it becomes very mundane

criitz,

What are you trying to get done? This is your life right now. Enjoy it, don’t spend it worrying about the end.

This chart really makes no sense at all. How does Lord of the Flies lie at the intersection of The Handmaid’s Tale, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451?

One’s about an ultra-conservative theocracy, one’s about government surveillance and propaganda, and one’s about destroying books because people’s attention spans have reduced past the ability to read and they’re too long/confusing/depressing. I guess authoritarianism might lie at the heart of all these? Meanwhile, though, Lord of the Flies is more about the dangers of unchecked groupthink and how it can lead to violence and cruelty.
