Eh, not really. Always Online DRM is going to be even more of a thing in the future than it is now. It’ll be so baked into the application that any attempt at patching it will take so long that it’ll exceed the normal lifetime of the game itself.

This denuvo is already taking almost a year per game, and several are using it.

AllonzeeLV, (edited ) in Ignorance is bliss

I made a deal with myself a long time ago, my primary value:

I’d rather know than be happy.

Reality is cold and bleak. We have so many social constructs meant to obfuscate that fact. I wouldn’t change my values, but they aren’t a path to a shiny, happy life, and blissful ignorance values are among the biggest reasons our civilization’s outlook is so bleak.

A CEO has no desire to see how those they laid off are doing months later, or the children they hurt polluting a water source, or their own current employee’s subsistence living conditions despite the revenue they generate. They should have to see the pain they’ve caused to line their pockets, as should shareholders who applied pressure in willful ignorance for maximum profit(bliss), but ignorance is bliss.

Which is why, though alluring, the bliss of willful ignorance is a dangerous and antisocial value to live by.

Moriarty,

I feel the same way.

lemmy_ph,

Water resistance.

31337,

I used to have a water resistant Samsung Galaxy with a removable battery. The just put a seal on the battery cover.

Mango,

Bull. If you can get current in through the waterproof Type-C port, you can have a battery with a waterproof housing send current through some terminals.

MisterHex,

Usb c ports can detect a short and shut off to avoid damage. Batteries can’t do this and that’s why they are sealed into the phone.

Buddahriffic,

Ok, then add that circuitry to the battery package.

w2tpmf,

Ok. Then the phone is bigger and more expensive once you add that.

Veneroso,

I use the Samsung Galaxy S22 ultra. It’s already huge. Make it huger! More bigger! More money! CAPITALISM INTENSIFIES!

Cicraft,

That’s what they want you to believe

Signtist,

I just don’t get this. I’ve had to get new phones twice now because the battery life got bad enough that my phone wouldn’t last even a single day on a charge, but I’ve never even gotten close to dropping my phone in water. Are people that clumsy that they loosely hold their phone when they’re in the bathroom or on a boat? It’s the same with dropping it in general - I’ve dropped a phone twice since getting my first smartphone in 2010, and both times it was luckily onto carpet. Yeah, survivability is nice, but it’s trumped by everyday usability.

9Bsk3IVAnlAYf, (edited )

I like that all of my media is on a removable card I can pop in any device I want and it doesn’t interfere with system files and apps. Makes the initial setup of a new device much easier, not to mention backing it up to my hard drive (cp -r * /media/user/whatever_disk and I’m done).

As someone with a youtube channel and regular uploads … fuck ads. Use uBlock Origin, Adblock Plus or whatever else works to wipe that garbage off the screen.

I’m extra sour about their suuuuuper useful new-ish option for content creators to turn off personalized ads in their channels - something I immediatly agreed to, because I thought it would, … y’now … get rid of the fucking ads.

Nope. All it does is swap “personalized” ads for “unpersonalized” ones, so my followers get the same type of garbage shoved into their faces, just more random. Thanks Youtube, this is exactly what I wanted to achieve. dripping sarcasm, in case it wasn’t obvious

lud,

unpersonalized ads are much better for privacy and are less effective at selling stuff which is better for the user.

justlookingfordragon,
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

Even better would have been an option to turn them off entirely =P but that’s what UBlock Origin is for.

lud,

Can’t you turn them off? I thought that was the only option if you didn’t reach a thousand subs or something

justlookingfordragon,
@justlookingfordragon@lemmy.world avatar

I have 20k followers and no option to turn off ads except the thing mentioned above, which only swaps ad types. But it might be different for people who have monetized their channels, which I don’t have and never will.

lud, (edited )

I guess you just have to swear a lot or something.

Or accept that the ads are paying for the service that you use.

They still do. My 2021 model phone has dual SIM, with one of the slots being enabled for either a SIM card or a SD card.

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Many if not most new models don’t have them though

normalexit,

This drives me crazy. An iPhone 15 pro max with 256gb of storage is 1199 and the 512gb is 1399.

So $200 for an extra 256gb. Meanwhile a fast, name brand, 1tb micro SD card is about $100.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Phones that use those are still relatively easy to find tho.

madcaesar,

Who needs a micro SD when you can pay a subscription cloud service for the rest of your life??? - morons responding to me every time I lament the need for an SD card

Not to mention if your screen gets fucked you can remove the card and have all your photos / movies instantly

shork,

Why not both! I love SD but its also pretty handy I can access photos from my PC without needing any further action (I refer mostly to OneDrive right now) SD still rules tho.

phoenixz, in So that's it, huh? We're some kind of Suicide Squad?

That leaves for an interesting question: why is most writing these days so god awful? There are great writers out there. Hollywood isn’t stupid (is it?) and wants money. Why do they put shit writers on so many projects that then flop like the shit that it is?

yamanii,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

Most of everything is shit, you just remember the few good ones, you don’t remember the no name awful series that were airing together with Lost.

masterbaexunn,

And even then Lost was also written with shit crayons. Especially the later stuff

Crashumbc,

With streaming, it’s become about volume not quality. Before there were only so many movie screens and straight to video made next to nothing.

Now straight to streaming can make a LOT of money. Plus streaming services are trying to pump their selection and in-house productions cost nothing once produced. So even average or just good enough content can be profitable.

saintshenanigans,

Executives chasing profits with data they don’t understand, or the show just sticks around too long.

douglasg14b,
@douglasg14b@lemmy.world avatar

Because it’s targeting the lowest common denominator.

It’s generalizing the writing so that it generally appeals to generally everyone to increase engagement. This means that the show loses its specific attractions and it just becomes another generic TV show based in a different world.

SpaceCowboy,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

Hollywood is stupid and they didn’t want to pay writers after the first draft is written. It may not be so much the writer is shit (they came up with some good ideas after all) it’s that they don’t have time to make additional drafts to fix plotholes, improve the dialog, etc.

Writing isn’t just banging out something on a typewriter and it’s pure genius the moment is written. It’s a process that usually involves multiple drafts.

You gotta admit a lot of things feel like a first draft, and it’s probably because it is. Hopefully these issues were sorted out with the writer’s strike.

jenny_ball, (edited )
@jenny_ball@lemmy.world avatar

it’s not a simple answer but due to technology and environment, it’s just the way things are. basically less care is taken to get each minute of output simply because it’s possible. so many things. you don’t have to log heavy reels around, you don’t have to use a typewriter. each step is so much easier. before, there was a lot more care taken per step.

humorlessrepost, (edited ) in Ignorance is bliss

Reports that say that something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tends to be the difficult ones.

Recently this was Hazbin Hotel for me. Thought I would give it a shot but it’s written like a kid’s show instead of an edgy adult comedy about demons.

EndlessApollo, (edited )

I liked the hazbin hotel pilot, but very much felt how you do about the helluva boss pilot. I thought hazbin was fun and quirky and I liked it a fair bit, helluva boss cranked up the edginess and immaturity but didn’t bring anything else that made up for it. Maybe the actual series is better Idk

PixelatedCleric,

Aw man, I was hoping it’d be better. I will still see and hope for the best.

OhShitSon,

How is it compared to Helluva Boss?

Ibaudia,
@Ibaudia@lemmy.world avatar

Much less clever and subtle. I would call that a pretty low bar, honestly. Helluva Boss also has a lot of poorly-written content IMO, but in Hazbin it’s nonstop bad writing until there’s a small glimpse of something competent. I would recommend Helluva Boss to anyone who likes shitposts and sitcoms, but I wouldn’t recommend Hazbin to anyone right now.

OhShitSon,

Damn, had high hopes, too bad.
