Flirt on, if you like her. You’re gonna be awkward. It’s gonna be supacringe. If she digs you, and is worth your time, she’ll like the awkwardness. She’s looking for a fellow human, not a love god.

But if she gets turned off, then it wasn’t meant to be. You have failed, but you have learned, there’s still a billion-odd potential mates left to meet.

kinther,
@kinther@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. This right here

applebusch,

You didn’t necessarily fail if they aren’t into it. In the words of Jean-Luc Picard “It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.” Some people just don’t mesh, and that’s ok. You don’t need to put pressure on yourself to like or be liked.

jaschen,

You honestly didn’t really failed. You mostly learned that she/he isn’t the one for you. Just move on to someone else that might be a better fit.

Floppy disks??

Isthisreddit,

Nuclear arsenals use floppies, and for good reason.

Personally I use spinning hard drives as floppies, but same idea (offline storage, usually off-site as well if I have time)

Blue_Morpho,

I’d think Blu-ray m-disc would be a bit safer than a floppy that could have a bit flip from being too close to an iPhone (magsafe).

TrickDacy,
@TrickDacy@lemmy.world avatar

I’m gonna need an explanation as to floppies and hard drives being so similar. I can easily buy a brand new hard drive. Floppy disks and drives, not so much…

siipale,

Both are spinning magnetic disks. I guess they meant the reliability aspect of the storage medium.

TrickDacy,
@TrickDacy@lemmy.world avatar

I honestly had several catastrophic failures of floppy disks that made me stop trusting them. imo floppy disks are the least reliable way to store data by far

siipale,

I don’t know how reliable SSD is compared to magnetic but I guess they do fail too. Good thing about SSD is that it doesn’t have moving parts so at least one fewer points of failure.

TrickDacy,
@TrickDacy@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on how much writing you are doing. I think that if you’re doing tons of writes all the time, HDD might edge out SSD, but it all depends on a lot.

Floppies were an entirely different beast. Instead of a disk failing every few years, a floppy disk that hadn’t been used in a few months, in my experience, was about 50/50 if it was bad or corrupted in some way.

How about the fact that as the overall population becomes top heavy with the elderly and fewer young people … the economy won’t be able to sustain paying for older people because there will be too few young people driving the economy.

This isn’t meant to divide … this is an honest worry of mine because I’m middle aged and by the time I get old and feeble, the economy probably won’t be able to afford to care for people my age.

Unless you’re a billionaire, millionaire or the child of one, we’re all screwed.

Aceticon,

It gets even better: the high cost of essentials - especially housing - in relation to salaries makes said young people refrain from having as many kids as they would otherwise have (basically 1 or none instead of 2 or 3) meaning the problem is going to get worse.

sukhmel,

It suddenly got me that this may be seen as capitalism (regarded by some as apex idea of humanity) is driving humanity extinct. Quite a sad irony

Croquette,

Capitalism is making the planet less livable for human. So yes, capitalism is driving humanity extinct.

A video that gives a simplified view of the problem

    Ataraxia,

We have never been able to afford the elderly because the elderly are extremely resource intensive. Getting old is extremely expensive and has been. Do not get old.

And the best way to avoid this in the future is to continue to lower the population so eventually we won’t have so many elderly people. Stop making people, they will likely get old and be unsustainable.

    simin,

what we can automate we do really well making the rest paying less than before.

    Xanis,

I don’t disagree. Yet people on the top heavy side continue to disproportionately support the individuals who collectively make it more difficult to live comfortably at any age. Those at or around retirement age are in this situation almost purely as a result of their choices, and/or a colorful, almost deceitful, blindness.

I can’t blame any of them though. Many of us below 40 have had access to a million points of data via the internet over the years. So identifying these issues has been much easier for your average person. Of course on the other hand…

I think the big issue is we can’t seem to truly agree on a course of action long enough to make anything happen. So…I don’t know. Apart from us all pushing ourselves and people we trust into lower offices, I do not feel I am wise enough to suggest any solution.

  • ParsnipWitch,

What kind of perspective does one need to have to believe it is good when there are no resources (money, people) to care for the elderly?

    meat_popsicle,

We’ll save money on out-of-control healthcare costs if the elderly just died instead of lingered. A tree needs to have the dead or dying branches pruned or they’ll endanger the trunk. The elderly are willing to sacrifice themselves for the economy; that’s what the Lt. Governor of Texas said during COVID.

Not supporting this perspective, but I’ve heard social darwinists say “the weak should fear the strong” and other horrid shit unironically.

    ParsnipWitch,

I know this type of scary talk. It also comes up when people talk about assisted suicide. Some people on the fringe believe it would be a good option for addicts, the homeless, etc.

They believe it’s a rational standpoint. In reality they ignore the consequence this approach would have for our society on a psychological level.

    Ataraxia,

I shoukd always have the right to choosing a comfortable death though. Otherwise I’ll have to go walk into the woods and hope mother nature isn’t cruel that day.

These types people always talk as if they’re immune to sudden, life-changing events. It’s all fun and games until some random a-hole hits you while driving drunk and makes you permanently disabled. Maybe you’re unlucky and have your entire city/neighbourhood burn down from an uncontrolled wildfire.

neige, in This is great. You should try it.

    are you a minority?

LemmysMum, in He's coming to town

I had someone ruin this for me so now it’s time to share the love.

If John Mclane had stayed in his lane and left the situation to play out nobody would have died and a corporation would have been robbed.

    lseif,

but… corporations are people too 😥

    EvilTwin,

I’m pretty sure the plan was to take the hostages to the roof, blow up the roof and escape in an ambulance.

Lots of people would have died if Mclane hadn’t intervened.

    cynar,

Weren’t they planning on herding everyone to the roof and blowing it up?

The plan was to do that to cover their getaway. Herd the hostages up to the roof, nominally to stop snipers while they got in a helicopter. Then flow it all up. By the time they sorted the body parts and realized they weren’t there, they would be gone and safe by a different route.

This is also why getting the detonators back was so important. Without them, they couldn’t blow the roof.

    LemmysMum,

Arguably the police would never have been alerted to the situation and the drastic measures would never have been required.

    LordTrychon,

The FBI ultimately getting involved was always a part of Gruber’s plan. Couldn’t bypass the last lock on the safe without them cutting the power.

    LemmysMum,

Ooh. Forgot about that. Seems I’m due a rewatch of everyone’s favourite Christmas movie.

    LordTrychon,

Me too, because after I posted that, I also remembered his monologue about how if you steal $100M in bearer bonds they will find you unless they think you are dead.

So yeah, I don’t remember if it was discussed but I think McClane just sped up the timetable for getting the authorities involved. They definitely tried to keep it quiet at first though.

But also, Mr Takagi was murdered before John had done anything, IIRC.

    funkless_eck,

it’s crazy this movie is so well constructed considering each scene was written the day before filming

tiredofsametab, in Japan is living in the future that the 1990s dreamed of.

As someone who filled out multiple copies of the same contract by hand to buy a house recently, which had to be stamped with my seal and not signed, AHHHHHHHHHHghgghhg. On average, I only have to fax something once every several years. NTT, the main telecoms provider, STILL requires that you fax paperwork to get internet (at least for NTT East as of two years ago).

Using cash is great (except for my airline miles account), but one of the biggest banks in Japan is notorious for outages. ATMs here also, until very recently, had business days and hours. That's finally mostly gone, at least. They can still run out of money at the year-end holiday season as everyone is home with family and they're not always restocked in some locations, but more ATMs also helped to solve this. The problem with things transitioning to electronic payment is also those payment processors take a cut. We have all kinds of payment apps here, but many small businesses I know hate using it. The ones I know that use it most generally have larger foreign customer bases (anecdotal to business owners I know; may not be generally true in all of Tokyo/Japan).

They replaced those in the like 2018 or 2019.
