Does nobody who says this remember their days in highschool?
Let’s say a bedtime of 9
School gets out at 3
Allot about 2 hours for homework, it’s now 5
Allot an hour for dinner, it’s 6
Congratulations! A kid has a whopping 3 hours of free time per weekday to enjoy the last few years of childhood. These are even relatively conservative numbers, HW could easily stretch into 3-4+ hours with an AP class or a particularly HW heavy teacher leaving a whole hour of free time! How wonderful.
Oops wait, a strict parent(s) now adds an additional hour for household chores, ah well so much for free time.
The whole point is that they shouldn’t have to make that choice…
I also made that choice, so I know exactly how unhealthy it is to either 1) not have any time in the day to decompress and mentally prepare myself for the next day or 2) Revenge stay up so that I can do 1 but only get 5-6 hours of sleep.
the whole damn point is that teenagers can’t just choose to go to sleep earlier, all that would result in is them laying wide awake in bed and missing out on time to socialize.
And I’m saying, with how dense an average teenager’s schedule is, going to sleep earlier results in them having no free time in their lives. It’s just sleep, school, homework, sleep, school, homework.
That’s no life. I know, I lived through it. What you’re suggesting is an illusion of choice. Not to mention that as a teenager I could get in bed at 9 and just stare at the wall until 3am. One does not simply “go to bed” when your brain is simmering in hormones.
It sucks, but as things are those are the options for them. Either less sleep and more free time or cutting back on free time.

Worked for us during camp. Took a while to get to the rhythm but worked. Dunno if it’s an actual thing that teenagers have to sleep on a schedule where they have to stay up late. If so, sucks, then they got no choice.

People keep thinking everything said online is an argument. I’m just telling you those are their options. It’s tough titties for them since they really can’t affect when their school starts.
Don’t be angry at me that that’s how it is. I didn’t make it so.

Well duh. As adults, authority figures and parents that’s our job to push for these things and get it done for them. Just because we had to suffer through it doesn’t mean the status quo should remain the same. That’s the same BS “pull up the ladder behind me” attitude that’s affecting so many other things.

lol … I had a nephew like that … at around the age of 12 to 15 a few years ago … I’d be visiting their family, then around 10, he’d yawn, make a big show and say he’s going to bed.
What the parents just ignored was that he was lying in bed with his ipad and phone until early, early in the morning watching movies, youtube or tv all night long and getting absolutely no sleep … wake up like a drunken sailor every morning and not pay attention at school.
The parents didn’t care because the kid wasn’t bothering them and he stayed quiet in his room … he could live their by himself on the wifi connection for all they cared. … high speed internet is a great baby sitter.
There is a law in the US that says trucks must meet a certain Miles per gallon fuel economy. But there is a loop hole that says trucks over a certain size are not included in that law. So as long as the trucks are ridiculously big they don’t need to worry about their fuel economy.
Should be to work. I work in an office and about 25% drive trucks to work. Not one of then tow, off road or carry anything in the back, but will definitely pay 125k thanks to loans on their big boy diesel truck.
One of the laziest shop steward’s nephew I have ever dealt with had one of those trucks. You telling me a guy like that is hauling lumber on the weekends?
Yes. A lot of the people who drive trucks do so because “I’m a big boy! Listen to me make lots of noise in my big lifted truck! Vroom Vroom!!”
If people are actually using it for a small business or whatever, sure, I’ll live, but most of the people who buy them are just buying them because they want people to know their dicks are small.
Over here (in Europe) they just changed that. Reduced tariff is only for trucks registered to a company. Private persons pay full. It cut back on truck sales drastically.
At the time the law was passed, the carve out was for work trucks which made a minority of the market. Possibly less than 10%, but they also put tariffs on the light trucks imported from Asia, and so now almost 30 years later we have the situation we’ve got now.
We need to revoke the tariffs on the light trucks for normal people.
Also make it so you have to have a business licence to buy them, and a CDL to drive these “work trucks”
Isuzu still has a light truck division, and the Asian market still has loads of smaller vehicles, we just need to get off this “tank obsession” here in the US
I looked everywhere for a truck of normal size when I was truck shopping. Midsized trucks are bigger now than full sized trucks were when I was younger. The only way to get a small one in the USA is to buy something that’s old.
The footprint-based system means that selling more small vehicles does not necessarily help manufacturers meet the standards. Smaller vehicles are subject to more stringent requirements, such that a manufacturer of smaller vehicles has a lower CO2 standard while a manufacturer of larger vehicles has a higher CO2 standard. Footprint systems encourage improvements in efficiency, regardless of vehicles size, and have relatively little impact on vehicle size mix. Unlike a weight-based standard, a footprint-based standard encourages use of lightweight materials while maintaining the vehicle size, without subjecting the manufacturers to a higher CO2 requirement.
I’m fully in favor of tiered and more rigorous licensing. Basic license should only clear you to drive a small, low-power sedan/wagon/hatchback. Vast majority of people won’t ever need more than that.
holy hell. that’s just idiotic. who has that much money to blow on gas?
edit: i saw a post recently saying it costs some truck owner $80 to drive to and from work. i did the math and estimated 8 mpg, so i thought they were exaggerating. but nope, my estimate was pretty damn close to reality, and that’s an absurd amount of money to just throw away every day
My partner literally had to send her mother our budget and attached bank statements to illustrate how we could struggle to pay the bills even with 3 jobs between the 2 of us.
I will say she finally got it - that you can work hard and scrimp and save, and still come up short.
Thank you and well said. She’s by no means a bad person. I like her a lot. it’s just the last job she had was as a nurse in the 80s in London; meanwhile, her husband had the same job for 40 years, so her perspective is way out-of-date with reality.
This actually reminds me of an incident in high school.
One of the teachers was younger and pretty cool, and one day we were told there would be a substitute later that week, but the teacher wanted to help us mess with the sub, so instead of Literature class that day, we practiced humming at a super low volume to make the sub question their hearing, gracefully dropping pencils and books at opportune times, etc.
Well the day finally came, and sufficed to say we failed at being discreet and the sub got pretty pissed at us. The scheduled lesson was abandoned, and instead we were told to write a short essay about how we should behave in class and the lessons we should be focused on.
Well it was high school lit, so we were reading some books that had adult themes and things, and some of the kids wrote that we were learning how to identify prostitutes (some character had a different woman visit all the time) or how to murder or whatever.
The next week the teacher was back, and because of our shenanigans and the essay content, we heard that they basically had to fight to keep their job, and damn did we all feel like fucking idiots after that.
I still think about that teacher from time to time. I hope they’re doing ok.
When I first got on Lemmy I only posted OC. But Ive since realized two things: 1) creating content takes time/effort and 2) no one cares or notices that you’re just doing OC.
So now I sprinkle in reposts if I haven’t seen them on here before.
Who's to say cows can't be milked in Zootopia?
If you can earn money by donating blood and organs (i.e. part of a kidney or liver), guys can earn money donating sperm, women donating eggs, then why couldn't a Zootopia cow (or other mammals for that matter) donate their milk?
