Yeah, all the other “countries” use the term “state” when referring to them in English. The US is the only place that has a ‘federal’ level ‘above’ states. If you’re on Lemmy, you should have some idea of what federation means. This should all put in perspective what the original idea of the United States was and how much control each level was intended to have.
This also makes it all the more hilarious and stupid how Texans wanna call themselves a country. They don’t even know the words they’re using.

This is the notion of Heidegger’s “thrownness”, which I love as a philosophy concept for how straightforward it is. We all have this feeling that we were “thrown into” the world without choice and have to make the best of the situation we’re born into.
