Axxi, (edited ) in What nice vibes

I had never viewed this commercial before today. After reading the comments here, naturally I wanted to see it for myself and followed a link. I honestly didn’t see anything other than standard sibling interactions. The early morning “dreamy-style” lighting (prime coffee drinking time) is the only thing that gave off a romantic atmosphere of any kind. From the comments here it’s clear others see something between the two across but it feels like a bit of a reach to me.

dangblingus,

This is definitely not normal sibling interactions. It is categorically creepy and the direction makes it seem like theyre romantic partners.

ChexMax,

I think if you go into it knowing they’re siblings, it’s all fine and normal. The rest of us saw the commercial blind, naturally interpreted the relationship as romantic and then were surprised to learn they’re siblings and the recalibration was funny. If you have no context, and you’re trying to interpret what the relationship is, at the beginning it definitely resembles a romantic relationship more than a sibling friendship

pascal,

The rest of us saw the commercial blind, naturally interpreted the relationship as romantic

But… the first single word the actress said was “SISTER!” while pointing at herself…

I own two houses and seven toilets and I can’t say that I have ever had my toilets stink unless they are broken or not cleaned regularly.

Also, they might be stinky if I was to get my nose all up in there, but I tend not to do that.

As far as I know, my bathrooms all have working fans as well. That could cause issues if they were broken.

soggy_kitty,

Cleaning regularly is the one, your short comment above insinuated flushing is all you need to do.

remotelove,
@remotelove@lemmy.ca avatar

The short comment I posted should be classified as a quip.

What it actually insinuated is there is a very short list of operating and maintenance procedures for toilets. If you are to the point of closing the lid to contain odors, some of those basic steps might be getting missed. Hence, the quip.

Source - I work on tech

uis,
@uis@lemmy.world avatar
thefloweracidic, (edited )

Mini Rant:

When you think about it software development is a relatively young profession compared to medicine, law, construction, public services, the arts, and so on. This is why modern tech kind of sucks despite being so cool, I say we are in the “Hey maybe we shouldn’t build our huts right on the river” phase of writing code, still figuring out problems that will appear mind numbingly simple in the future.

Another issue is the fact that tech builds on itself and its flaws can be painted over with abstractions, while the aforementioned professions can’t get away with being subpar for too long. So the full metaphor really is after the river floods we build on top of the ruins and claim victory because we are slightly more elevated and will take less damage during the next flood.

The secret to better tech is rebuilding everything from scratch. The internet wasn’t designed with security and bad actors in mind. Plenty of corporations are running a Frankenstein system that contains code older than most millennials, botched modernization efforts, buzzword laden over-engineered applications, and bugs that aren’t features just permanent residents in your code base.

…But there is profiteering to contend with, good code takes time, time is money, good code is expensive. “Good enough” code is easy to write, so its better for the bottom line.

In the end it really is…

Developer: “Hey the river flooded and our huts were demolished, we should move to higher ground and build there”

Corporate Leadership: “No that is too expensive, just build on the ruins and next flood we should be safer, oh also you’re laid off”

I know you didn’t ask for this, but its been on my mind for a while and I felt like this was a good time to get this out of my head haha

cmhe, (edited )

The secret to better tech is rebuilding everything from scratch. The internet wasn’t designed with security and bad actors in mind. Plenty of corporations are running a Frankenstein system that contains code older than most millennials, botched modernization efforts, buzzword laden over-engineered applications, and bugs that aren’t features just permanent residents in your code base.

Rebuilding everything from scratch will take ages and cost everyone a lot of money, because you have to replace all your hardware (router boxes, PC s, phones, smart watches, …), because the internet protocols are often designed into the hardware itself, and changing them fundamentally means a lot of trash. Also there is no system that guarantees that the result will have fewer issues or will not required to be succeeded by something else a couple of minutes later, because some new issue was discovered.

Also software is highly complex and need to adapt to many different scenarios, while maintaining compatibility to each other, which the other disciplines of human engineering don’t have to deal with as much, they are much more purpose driven.

It is like trying to create a universal building code (for building houses) that simultaneously works on every country on earth, hell, maybe even on multiple planets, with wildly different and constantly changing environments and is guaranteed to result in save houses. Not really possible in one shot, only possible by constantly trying to adapt. That is what software has to deal with. I am talking about fundamental software like the Linux kernel here, for example.

You cannot just start over and be better.

Eyelessoozeguy,

What does the Brazilian electronic voting system do that allows you to trust it? I’m not trying to bait or anything I know nothing about it and want to be informed.

cmhe, (edited )

Luckily in many European countries it is not used.

I would credit institutions like the chaos computer club and other non-profits, which where instrumental in convincing the government about the dangers. It was a difficult battle against the corporate lobbyists, and is understandable that other countries could not fight against the corporate interests or corruption and succumb to use them.

There where and still are so many issues with them, one of the most fundamental is described by Ken Thompson in his Reflections on trusting trust, which is especially effective for electronic voting machines, where no other way of verification is possible.

afraid_of_zombies,

uis,

You didn’t say you wanted database for warehouse inventory managment. In that case paper only useful for storing append-only logs or taking snapshots.

lud,

You are probably talking about the arctic vault.

They use film for extreme archival purposes that are not representative of anything normal.

Qr codes can be great but they obviously need to interact somehow (not directly I hope) with a real database.

You are probably talking about the arctic vault.

Yes, github arctic code vault. It seems some people just don’t get it.

Qr codes can be great but they obviously need to interact somehow (not directly I hope) with a real database.

I mean QR codes as a mean of storing lots of data on paper, in a way that does not require humam or OCR for computer to read. Basically as a joke about paper databases.

It’s like non-security tech savvy people embracing IoT devices throughout their homes - smart bulbs, smart toasters, etc - fucking disaster waiting to happen.

Keeping stuff offline with paper and floppies is exceptional SecOps. It’s obviously more work, and ease-of-use is degraded, but if we ever see real cyber warfare, having stuff on paper and/or airgapped storage is the best one can hope for

Right. It’s the pressed pills that get the “ecstasy” name in my area, which have binders.

LUHG_HANI,
@LUHG_HANI@lemmy.world avatar

That’s most likely the case. I know they did used to cut with speed or MDA.

hypnicjerk, (edited )

to add to this, a lot of what was sold as ecstasy (at least back in my day) contained little to no mdma at all and was typically just a cheap upper of some sort. originally ecstasy was close to 1:1 slang for pressed mdma pills but over time it became more attached to the pills and less to the molly specifically (mostly for marketing purposes).

of course you can crush x and snort it but at that point it would probably be more accurate to refer to it as molly or speed depending on what’s actually in it.

humorlessrepost,

Yeah, we definitely still needed reagent test kits back then. At least the one that would turn yellow for the common fake kind at the time, and black for mdma. But the real stuff was still around.

jol,

Well thc doesn’t dissolve well in water. But if you would purify it and snort it, it would still work.

mpa92643,

It wouldn’t. THC has to be decarboxylated via heating before it has any psychoactive effects.

If you eat an ounce of weed, you’d just get a tummy ache. If you heat up an ounce of weed in the oven just hot enough to decarboxylate the THC before you eat it, you’ll be experiencing your tummy ache on an entirely different plane of existence.

AngryCommieKender,

You can dissolve it in alcohol, though I don’t recommend snorting alcohol, that sounds painful.

havokdj,

Some people do it but there’s no reason to, it’s not going to come faster but it will leave faster.

Also, MDMA is not even an abusable drug if done for the euphoric effects. Do it enough and you’re essentially just doing less addictive meth.

shalafi,

And I walked or biked to my elementary school every day in the 70’s. Many kids are raised very differently now, hence my comment.

I’m working to make my small children independent, their mother, my-ex wife, is working to keep them dependent.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

is this an americabrained comment? here in sweden, and this is not some urbanist paradise, kids can absolutely get to school on their own, whether that be walking biking or taking public transport.

it’s in fact bog standard for kids to take the bus to school in my town, to the point that you really want to avoid their travel times because buses will be jam packed with annoying children.

shalafi,

Yep, America all right. Couple of things:

  • In some states it’s illegal to leave children of a certain age unsupervised. I think it’s 11 and below here? People do it anyway and no one’s looking to prosecute, but it’s a thing.
  • I can’t speak for every municipality in America, but the elementary schools around here do not allow kids to walk or bike to school. Either that, or every single parent, no exceptions, disallows it, because I’ve never seen a child that young coming into or leaving the school on their own. FFS, when I used to pick up my stepson, same car every day, the teacher had to put their hand on the roof and look me in the eye through a rolled-down window. That was literally the rule.

So like I said, “some of the younger ones aren’t mature enough or raised independently enough”. It sucks, but it’s true.

I have an 8 and 10-yo. They love my house because I allow them freedom. We went to a huge camping place to get married this weekend, local outfitter sort of thing. I gave them some instructions and warnings, cut them loose. Their helicopter mom would shit her pants if she knew they walked all over the woods alone.

(And of course we got the usual comment below crying about capitalism. I’m not sure if these people expect that no one works for a living, or they don’t do it on a coordinated schedule, or what.)

ReplicantBatty,

I’ve been alive for over 30 years and my body hasn’t adapted yet. How much more time will it take?

GojuRyu,

Working off of memory so take this with a good amount of salt. If I recall correctly, studies have found that teenagers generally don’t go to bed later to match if school starts later, but the same applies the other way too. It may be that they technically could get that sleep by going to bed earlier, but as a society that is not a viable proposal to fix the problems that arise from their lack of sleep.

Also just to make sure I’m not misunderstood, I don’t dispute that individuals can get used to a new sleep schedule or will go to bed earlier if they have to get up earlier, just that it isn’t as easy as waking two hours earlier, means go to sleep two hours earlier for teenagers especially.
