Sorgan71, in Early bird

I dont see what the issue is, the kids have plenty of time to sleep, if they go to bed at 9 they can wake up at 6 with 8 hours of sleep and one hour to spare.

IWantToFuckSpez,

The biological clock of kids changes when they are teenagers, though. They tend to become night owls and thus they naturally feel tired at night.

Sorgan71,

The brain has adapted to be able to adapt to sleep patterns of all times of day. Kids stay up late because they don’t appreciate the value of sleep.

Furball,

Teens naturally go to bed later, and also need a lot more than 8 hours.

Sorgan71,

What time you go to bed is 100% up to you.

mriormro,
@mriormro@lemmy.world avatar

What time you force yourself to go to bed versus what time your body naturally falls asleep are two different things in current society.

Circadian rhythms exist and fluctuate.

Sorgan71,

but they can be controlled

mriormro,
@mriormro@lemmy.world avatar

The point is that we now know this to be true. Rather than try to shoehorn our biological needs in whatever spare pockets of time we can scrounge, we should focus on better adapting our society and it’s systems to our needs at all stages of life.

Your bootstraps mentality is counterproductive.

Sorgan71,

The point is that there is no time period which teenagers are more able to fall asleep. They can fall asleep as easily at 8 as they can at 10.

mriormro, (edited )
@mriormro@lemmy.world avatar

there is no time period which teenagers are more able to fall asleep

This is unequivocally false. That’s literally a part of the circadian cycle. We can more easily fall asleep at particular spans of our 24 hour cycle. These spans shift depending on our age.

Specifically concerning sleep patterns in adolescents and teenagers, see here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19546564/

Sidhean,

I can’t believe Sorgan71 was sitting on the cure to insomnia this whole time! When we go to bed is 100% up to us, of course! :3

And here in Sweden he is pissy that the workforce has rights as well, and I predict he’ll be even more pissy to realize that his handling of the entire situation has made other people less in favour of switching to a Tesla. Solidarity is big here - even with the general population of right wing voters.

kismattic, (edited )
@kismattic@lemmy.world avatar

Really love to hear that! Back around like 2016-2019 I loved the idea of switching to a Tesla. Couldn’t afford it but always thought it was something to strive for. Well, that is no longer the case for me and I actively encourage people to shop other EV’s if they’re set on them and to avoid anything with his name tied to it.

I feel dumb promoting the dude with a low effort meme, but hearing replies like this I feel makes it worth it.

Why not just go to bed earlier?

Habahnow, (edited )

This is actually a good question that people may not read into very well, and the OP probably knows but didn’t indicate: Humans have a circidian rhthym which is a component that indicates when you naturally want to wake up and sleep. Thoughout our lives it changes at different points, but the important point is that for teenagers, they want to be up at night and also wake up later(almost the exact opposite of elderly people).

So trying to make students sleep at 10pm is very difficult vs having school start later to allow classes to better match their sleep cycle.

harry_balzac,

Additionally, many people who have been well and truly diagnosed with ADHD also experience Delayed Circadian Rhythm which makes them into night owls.

School districts that have shifted to a later start, especially for 12 and up (age wise), have seen improvements in attendance, behavior, and grades.

DannyMac,
@DannyMac@lemmy.world avatar

From an evolutionary point of view, I wonder if it has to do with giving them plenty of evening time for sexual activities. Especially since 30 used to be old age at one point in our past, so teenage years were the childbearing years…

I mean he has all but announced the fact Twitter will go into administration soon.

He literally said this latest move by advertisers will tank the company. He then blamed them for this.

My guess is he wants to get the narrative going that other companies killed twitter and not his mismanagement of it.

On brand, most chefs I know don’t eat like they cook.

GobiasIndustries,

Can confirm. Not only could I not afford to eat the style of food I cooked at work, the last thing that I wanted to do when I got home was put effort into my own food.

If I was eating at work, I’d cobble together some kind of salad out of whatever scraps and nearly expired food I could shove into my face in under 3 minutes. If I was “cooking” for myself at home, about the most complicated thing that I’d make for myself was cereal.

We used to go regularly to this sushi place and had gotten to know the chef pretty well. It was a semi-fancy place with a sushi bar and hibachi section. Really good cuts of sashimi. He said his favorite thing to eat is McDonald’s.

This is why I keep waking up before my alarm!

SSUPII, (edited )

I wonder what it takes for us to unlock this ability of ours. It happens so randomly, and always just a few minutes before the alarm. One time I woke up the exact minute prior to the alarm going off. Abd was wide awake even

Humans got an internal clock. My uncle who is a farmer has never used an alarm to wake him up. I personally stopped using an alarm years ago after high school, I just wake up ~5am and do my thing. The key is to just be consistent and your body will adapt.

lightnsfw,

Cats do too. My cat would wake me up if my alarm didn’t go off on time. Also he understood the difference between weekdays and weekends somehow because it didn’t happen on my days off.

Nommer,

Anxiety about oversleeping because you had a bad phone once that would make the alarm just randomly not work so after several times being late to work you just wake up 2 hours early and can’t get back to sleep

MonkderZweite, (edited )

Training. Though, amount of training differs from person to person. For me, it’s about 3 days of being woken at the same time and i wake up a few minutes before the clock. Looking at the clock before you sleep and thinking until when you want to sleep, may help adjust your internal clock.

fastandcurious, (edited ) in Early bird

Tbf it’s not gonna fix anything, teens need a LOT of sleep and their rhythm stray to as far as 4-5AM, so even when starting at 9 they won’t get a lot of sleep

What in my opinion would work is reducing school times a bit and have morning and evening batches with different staffs and the student could choose which time they want to attend, the productivity would be much higher making the lower time period not a problem, tho i am pretty sure there might be some issues in this system remembers CGP grey’s rule

ares35,
@ares35@kbin.social avatar

one solution would be longer school years (doesn't have to be a 'year-round' calendar) with maybe an hour or hour-and-a-half less class time per day. but that costs more in terms of food service, transportation, building upkeep, and so forth; plus extra child care burden on parents when most families don't have a 'stay at home' parent these days.

n0m4n, in Where's my cooking show already?

Asian brand ramen with 3 spice/oil packets are a base for a fabulous meal. Mei Mei is my favorite brand. At least so far.

H_Interlinked,

I’ve seen this around, but haven’t tried it yet. I’ll give it a shot. A few of my current recommendations are Samyang Buldak Hot Chicken Carbonara (the pink packs), and for a much more dry stir-fry style noodle I LOVE Indomie Mi Goreng noodles. Comes with 5 fucking packets so that aspect is a pain, but it’s well worth it.

n0m4n,

I’ll be buying Samyang Buldak Hot Chicken Carbonara and Indomie Mi Goreng noodles, too. MeiMei noodles are more toasted than most noodles. I eat the noodles plain and dry as hiking fare. The noodles themselves are that good. They taste somewhat like potato chips. The leftover spice packets go into Thai dishes,

To others who are reading, I was spoiled after trying the good stuff. I quit buying plain Ramen noodles, since.

Many thanks.

I find it pretty funny seeing people talk about how Japan is not as advanced as people think. Meanwhile my home state the majority of people don’t have Internet. I’ve been getting pretty convinced that most places use fax machines due to how few places have Internet. Anyplace that has any amount of beurocracy uses paper files. There are a considerable amount of places were cell signals simply don’t work. The only way reason I know of public transport busses is because of movies. VHS player are common place for house holds. Many work vehicles were made in the 60s and we still use buckets to collect sap when sugaring. Card readers are rare so some gas stations require you to pay with cash. All around the only advanced tech things Vermont has to offer are our winter cars and the f13s that occasionally blow peoples ear drums out.

    ez block, racism in any direction is wrong, even if casual, convenient, or seeming to you without harm.

    You absolutely meant to offend me, using a race based remark, with that one.

    Aleric,

    Indeed, you have shown all of us that blocking you is both ez and wise.

    GBU_28,

    Feel free, no worries. I just don’t use racism as a joke and call it out when I see it. any color.

    MonkeMischief,

    Either race-tinged observational jokes can be funny if good spirited (I subscribe to this view) or they should be considered poor taste 100% of the time. (That’s fine too)

    But this self-flogging “lol but it’s ok to be racist against people that look like me because the stereotype is some bad people also look like me, so I totally deserve it based on my ancestry, right guys?” Schtick isn’t good for anybody.

    (Unless you literally don’t face any injustice on your way to running the world, then I totally misunderstood lol.)

    But the idea that you should denigrate yourself to appease others’ misguided hatred of your racial “impurity” is…the exact concept we want to eradicate isn’t it?

    ASeriesOfPoorChoices,

    As a white person, I am authorising and allowing this joke to be made, and I am retracting and removing any racism labels associated or attached to it.

    You’re welcome!

    GBU_28,

    So one person of another race could “clear” a joke against their race? Obviously not.

    ASeriesOfPoorChoices,

    As a comedian, I am writing you referral for your doctor for a humor-transfusion. Any of the four will do.

    GBU_28, (edited )

    I get no one address with me here but I stand by it:

    If you can’t make the joke about another race, you shouldn’t make it about any race.

    Imagine suggesting a place is a “black nature preserve”. 100% inappropriate, therefore the joke is inherently racist

    A7thStone,

    I see, so context has no meaning, except when it means everything.

    FlyingSquid,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    I think you need to learn the difference between punching up and punching down.

    When white people become oppressed and stop being in control of practically everything in the U.S., you will have a point.

    Trollception,

    Most people don’t have home Internet because almost everyone has it on their phone. Plenty of people don’t own a computer anymore unless it’s for work.

    tiredofsametab,

    Both things can be true, but Vermont doesn't have a giant "We're a high-tech place!" image harped upon constantly that can feel like false advertising.

    Our school started at 8:30 for a whole year, it sucked ass. Since it was high school, the classes going until 4:30 was impossible to manage with a job, I’d end up getting home around 12:00 just to get a normal shift in. Extracurriculars lasted until 6:00! No time to do homework. Waking up early is a part of life, considering we can’t just lengthen the day.

    Been a while since I was in school, but high school went from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The bus arrived at my house at 7:30 and dropped me off at 3:30.
