Actually inferior to sliding windows. Europeans have a lot of things over NA, but this ain’t it.

How are sliding windows better? Also, are you able to clean the outside of the window from the inside?

Love those windows when travelling, but I have yet to see windows that open to the inside here in Ireland. Not sure whether it’s one of those crazy building regulations like no power switch or outlet inside the bathroom or auto-closing inner doors to each room.

I discovered these windows in Netherlands and Germany. I love it. Blew my mind.

Senshi,

I’m confused as well. How do you open windows in non-Europe?

jesuiscequejesuis, (edited )

Generally, like this: https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/11e02e4e-c45f-4d45-a221-1d457abe31ec.jpegThe two middle ones are the most common I see. I have one casement window in my house, but it just opens in one way, like in this image.

synapse1278,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

In france, we call the second one “guillotine”

anarchy79,

Never once in my life seen those anywhere in Europe.

sukhmel,

I saw something akin to the second one in Spain, they don’t have a good reputation for holding against cold there

anarchy79,
@anarchy79@lemmy.world avatar

Bah, the Spaniards are easily invaded, it’s the Russians we need to worry about!

IronKrill,

Canadian here, the most common I see is sliding horizontally. Our house has horizontal as well.

Buddahriffic,

Also Canadian, I’ve had horizontal sliding, single hung, and casement with that turning mechanism to open/close them. And I remember seeing windows that were hinged at the top and pushed outwards in high school. Not sure what held them open though.

On mobile i’ve got an app that lets me play youtube videos with the screen locked so i use that as well.

It’s a bit annoying cause the app does have ads as well, but only when you open it. If you put a video on and close it (leaving it playing on the background), there’s no ads

RubberElectrons, (edited )
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I’ve been using Newpipe to do this. Zero ads, free and open source too. Interface is a little rough, but you’ll get the hang of it quick.

Jorgelino,

Oh nice. I’ll check it out, thanks!

GregorGizeh, (edited )

My YouTube algorithm is just terrible. It will circle back the same 5-10 videos I have watched or liked some years ago, sprinkle in some rightwing political bullshit, or show only very tangentially related results.

Recent example: an underground artist popped into my head I used to listen to during my school days, and I wanted to go through their album for nostalgia.

Entering the artist and album name gives me two tracks from that album, a handful of other artists who have at some point collaborated, and the aforementioned unrelated or political results. Clicking through some of the videos always cycles back to the same few suggestions.

I even tried this on incognito mode to see if my login bricked the algorithm, but it was equally shitty. Apparently google can’t even get their own content indexed properly, not to mention actual web search.

Thcdenton,

The trick for me is to search playlists. But it might be a region issue depending on where you live

baseless_discourse, (edited )

bandcamp is pretty great. Granted, they are still a for-profit company; a popular community based solution would be nice. But they do let you download lossless file to self-host or just listen on device.

The only complain is the lack of classical music (not modern/contemporary classical) on there. But I would imagine most classical music is public domain by now. I just don’t know where to find them…

Edit: found it: www.classiccat.net or internet archive has a huge collection of classical music.

It’s intended to fuck with the mom-brain of a pregnant woman. Like putting porn in front of a guy going through No-Nut November. The goal is to hit those animal instincts and cause intense anxiety.

They’re not trying to influence teenage edgelords.

jak,

It’s different for everyone, but I was always put off by kids for all the typical reasons (boring, sticky, annoying, etc.), until I got pregnant.

I don’t mean that I love my kid so it’s different. I mean that the hormones associated with pregnancy changed all of my priorities. Thank god I had an abortion (I’d have a preteen with an alcoholic father and me for a mother- that’s not fair to a child), but it was much more difficult than I expected it to be.

With the pregnancy hormones, I definitely would have cried at this ad. Congratulations to them for emotionally manipulating the most emotionally unstable group in the world?

I know it’s a joke, and I’m super excited pro choice… But even knowing they’re dog/elephant their comment still works (other than the “humans” clarifier) as they can make independent thoughts and love their lives.

Breve,

Every time you need to pay someone who’s pro-life any amount of money, give them a nickle and tell them that if they put it in their bank account it will eventually grow to reach the amount of money you owe them, therefore you’ve just paid them in full. Easy.

Aceticon, (edited ) in Someone make glasses that do this please.

Living life in the present age is being almost constantly under pressure from people trying to influence you to do what they want (which is what Advertising is: sales pressure, often of the slimy kind that tries to influence you subconsciously).

Properly trying to do what is rationally in your own self-interest whilst minimizing the influence (as I mentioned, because Marketing nowadays use techniques from Psychology, commonly subconsciously) from those trying to manipulate you into giving them your money is tiresome, to say the least.

Just the other day I saw the new Aquaman film and the amount of in-your-face Product Placement (mainly of a known beer brand) was literally disgusting and significantly spoiled the film (which, frankly, wasn’t all that great to begin with - Special Effect rompfest with bad writting).

anarchy79, (edited )
@anarchy79@lemmy.world avatar

I saw my buddy watch the Aquaman film yesterday, and his face was glued to the screen like a child. Seeing anything Marvel or that other one in Europe is like, how do these people just eat this war mongering blatant military propaganda ultraconsumerist bullshit right up like that?

But then I remember it’s because of brainwashing since birth.

Aceticon,

Brainless violent rompfest films are basically chewing gum for the brain.

I wouldn’t read too much into it.

anarchy79,
@anarchy79@lemmy.world avatar

Please tell me you guys know about double (or now triple) glazing? right?

anarchy79,
@anarchy79@lemmy.world avatar

Are we talking about donuts here?

frezik,

Double paned windows are basically standard.

I looked at getting trippled paned windows a while back, and the benefits were marginal compared to double paned from the same company. It seems that once you’re already in the higher end of the market, they don’t do much over good double paned.

chrizzowski,

Yes, but also no. There are a bunch of other factors that contribute to a windows performance; manufacturer, type of gas used in the cavity, spacer material conductivity, thermal bridge free frame design, low e coatings and solar reflectance, and the quality of the installation matters most. Then there’s the windows efficiency relative to the rest of the assembly. If it’s a building code basic 2x4 wall from 1970 then you’re absolutely right, it would be overkill putting some triple pane krypton filled window in. But if you’ve got a foot of exterior insulation and are pushing a u value of 0.13 on your wall assembly then you need windows to match.

Source: certified Passive House designer, the most demanding energy standard for buildings available, that originated in … yup you guessed it, Germany.

frezik,

I have a relatively new house (built 2006). I came to the conclusion that the extra money spent on triple paned windows would be more effectively spent on improvements elsewhere. Like a heat pump or hybrid water heater.

In the end, we weren’t able to swing the windows at all, but did replace our crappy doors.

chrizzowski,

Sadly code minimums for newer builds haven’t really changed drastically in decades. It’s all just 2x6 with batt and poly, fundamentals the same as it has been since the 1970s. My 2019 build just had the shower lines freeze because they’re against an exterior wall (-30 cold snap, but still).

You’re probably right though that a heat pump is a better investment. Redoing the entire building envelope is a big ask if it’s not deteriorating and needing work anyway.
